In recent years, plasma assisted flowcontrol has been extensively studied in many laboratories worldwide. Twocommonly used are alternating current dielectric barrier discharge (AC-DBD) andnanosecond driven (ND-DBD) plasma actuators. The control mechanism of AC-DBD isthe formation of a low-speed near-wall jet, due to the interaction between thecharged species in the plasma and neutral particles near the surface, typicallya few meters per second. While the mechanism associated with the NS-DBD plasmaactuator is high amplitude thermal perturbations through Joule heating. Thistalk will discuss these two types of plasma actuators applied to flowseparation control over an airfoil at Reynolds numbers up to half million. Prosand cons of these plasma actuators are addressed. In addition, this talk willalso discuss some applications of plasma actuators to supersonic flow, such asplasma synthetic jet and plasma arcing actuators.
