About the talk: Coolingtechnologies that allow for a higher operating temperature of airfoils (stators and blades) in the turbine stage of a gas turbine engine are essential in increasing its operating efficiencies. Given the high temperatures required in the turbine stage and the limits of metallurgical properties, there is a large focus placed in developing associated cooling technologies. Even within the focus of cooling technologies utilized in aviation-based gas turbines engines, the field of knowledge is large. Given this large field of study, and numerous inconsistencies in terminology and nomenclature a summary introduction is being presented. This talk will cover the basics of why turbine cooling is necessary, the extreme conditions that the airfoils are exposed to and finally some of the techniques, and performance thereof, that are employed.
Bio: Sjouke Schekman is the Head of Design and Mechatronics for the school of Mechanical, Industrial and Aeronautical engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand. His current research focus is on thermal management of turbine airfoils within gas turbine engines. He obtained a BSc in Aeronautical Engineering and MSc from the University of the Witwatersrand and is currently working on his PhD.
