Professor, College of Aerospace Engineering, NUAA

Dr. Tongbeum Kim is Distinguished Professor in the College of Aerospace Engineering at the Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics (NUAA), Nanjing, China. Prior to which, he was Chair Professor of Thermofluidics in the School of Mechanical, Industrial and Aeronautical Engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa. At present, he holds Visiting Professorship in the Department of Mechanical and Construction Engineering at Northumbria University, Newcastle, UK and Honorary Professorship in the School of Mechanical, Industrial and Aeronautical Engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa.

His research focuses on the growing concerns over sustainability, primarily through the thermal management of various renewable/sustainable energy systems. Specific research interests cover (a) Solar thermal management and energy conversion by novel porous media, (b) Aerodynamics & heat transfer in turbomachinery, (c) Multifunctional battery thermal management systems for electric aerial/ground vehicles, (d) Nano/Micro-fluidics for energy conversion and management, and (e) Biomimetics and Bio-sampling.

Dr. Kim obtained a PhD in Aerothermal Engineering (Whittle Laboratory) from the University of Cambridge, UK after an MSc in Aerospace Engineering (Experimental Aerodynamics Group) from the Georgia Institute of Technology, USA and a BEng from KyungHee University, South Korea.

Dr. Kim has received numerous awards and recognition including a HTFS Best Paper Award from the 8th UK National Heat Transfer Conference (2003), an Outstanding Reviewer by the ASME Journal of Heat Transfer (2013), a University Research Commercialization Support Initiative Award from the Innovation Hub, Gauteng Province of South Africa (2015), ZhangJiaGang City Talent Award, Jiangsu, China (03/2021), and Provincial Double Innovation Talent Award, Jiangsu, China (07/2021).
